To avoid frozen pipes in your home, never allow the temperature in your house to drop below freezing and insulate any pipes that are exposed to the elements. The pipes may freeze if the surrounding temperature drops below freezing. It takes time for thawing to occur so you can have water again. But, more importantly, the pipes can burst, which will cause a huge mess and big repair bill.

When it gets very cold, your pipes may freeze. If it does, relieve the pressure in the pipe by turning on the tap so the water can be released as the pipe thaws. This assists you in relieving pressure within the pipe, and could stop any bursting from occurring, which can prevent additional damage to your home.

Hire a professional, or at least find your owner’s manual to look at a diagram of the disposal. Many owner’s manuals are available online, and may even contain interactive troubleshooters.

Keep grease, fat and oil out of your kitchen drain. When they cool off, they become hard and will clog your pipes. Especially if you operate a garbage disposal, the fat causes blades to be less efficient. Keep a container in your kitchen that is used specifically for discarded grease.
